The number of attacks has decreased

Animals have become less likely to attack Russians. Since the beginning of 2022, more than 203,000 people have applied to Russian medical institutions with complaints of being bitten, scratched or slobbered by animals – 6,000 less than in the same period of 2021.

As MK learned, the Federal Service for Supervision of Consumer Rights Protection and Human Welfare shared data on the number of people bitten by our smaller brothers. Of the total number of victims in 2022, 70% were bitten by dogs – this is more than 142 thousand people. In 2021, a little more such cases were recorded over the same period – 144 thousand.

In addition, since the beginning of 2022, only one case of rabies has been registered among the population of Russia. For comparison, last year during the same period 5 people were infected with rabies.

Rospotrebnadzor recalls that a sick animal can become a source of a deadly infection 3 to 10 days before the onset of clinical signs. The incubation period for rabies in humans is usually from 10 days to 2 months, although cases of its reduction to 5 days and increase to 1 year or more are known. To date, the only and effective means of preventing rabies is the timely provision of anti-rabies assistance after traumatic contact with an animal. First of all, it is necessary to carry out the initial treatment of the contact point – rinse thoroughly with a stream of water and soap. If there is a wound – after washing, you need to treat its edges with 5% tincture of iodine, apply a sterile bandage and immediately contact a medical facility. It is very important to take measures regarding the animal at the same time as contacting the doctor – it must be isolated and a specialist of the veterinary service should be called for consultation and organization of observation – 10 days from the moment of contact.
