Rosneft said it has created Russia’s largest database of genomes, “100,000+I”. The goal of the project is to read the genomes of 100 thousand Russians to develop the diagnosis of genetic diseases, the correspondent reports TASS from the presentation of the base at the Russia exhibition.
Director of the Department of Scientific and Technical Development of Rosneft Alexander Pashali said that employees of the oil and gas company and their relatives became volunteers for the project. Based on their genomes, 70% of the database will be collected.
Genome collection began in 2022. Currently, more than 34 thousand samples have been collected. Genetic portraits, which indicate possible predispositions to any diseases, were received by 14 thousand people.
The project is being implemented by the Whole Genome Sequencing Center at the Russian Academy of Sciences. Rosneft is the technological partner of the base creation project.
In 2020, Russian President Vladimir Putin offered create a national database of genetic information that will provide all scientific institutions with access to collections of genetic samples. In November 2021, Chairman of the Board of Rosneft Igor Sechin reported about the project of work to the president. For the first stage of the project, which includes collecting genomes from 100 thousand Russians, allocated RUB 22.5 billion
