“Today, the automatic station carried out the first correction of the trajectory of the flight to the Moon. The propulsion system of Luna-25 turned on at 16:00 Moscow time and worked for 46 seconds.
According to the route diagram of the station presented by Roskosmos, it will have one more correction of the trajectory before being placed into a lunar orbit.
The launch of the carrier rocket “Soyuz-2.1b” with the automatic station “Luna-25” from the Vostochny cosmodrome was carried out on August 11. Luna-25 is expected to enter a circumlunar orbit at a height of 100 km on August 16, and landing in the area north of the Boguslavsky crater on August 21.
Luna-25 is the first lunar mission in the history of modern Russia (the previous Soviet apparatus Luna-24 was launched in 1976), in which the station will make a soft landing in the region of the South Pole of the Moon. There she will collect lunar soil and deliver it to Earth. It is also planned to launch an automatic probe, the orbital part of which will make it possible to conduct remote research and select suitable sites for subsequent descent vehicles.
