Roskosmos announced the successful completion of fire tests of the RD-171MV liquid-propellant rocket engine, which will be used for the Soyuz-5 launch vehicle, informs state corporation in its Telegram.
“NPO Energomash (part of the state corporation Roscosmos) has successfully completed fire tests of the finishing engine RD-171MV, designed for the promising Soyuz-5 launch vehicle,” the report says. The state corporation itself calls the new engine “the most powerful in the world.”
The thrust of the new engine is 800 tons. He was able to work a total of 1461 seconds for nine fire tests without being removed from the test bench, the state corporation noted. “The tests confirmed the characteristics laid down in the design,” added the Roscosmos.
The RD-171MV engine itself is a modernized version of the Russian RD-171M engine, which was developed back in 2001. The Soyuz-5 medium-class launch vehicle was named Irtysh and was developed by RSC Energia. Rockets will be launched from the Baikonur Cosmodrome as part of a joint project with Kazakhstan.
After the start of the special operation in Ukraine and the imposition of sanctions, Russia refused supply to the United States its rocket engines used in the American Atlas-5 and Antares rockets. Dmitry Rogozin, then the head of Roscosmos, said that Russia planned to supply the United States with 12 RD-181 engines. In addition, negotiations were underway on the supply of RD-181M with improved technical characteristics, the head of the state corporation added.
