Means of bypassing blocking are already prohibited in the Russian Federation, and from March 1 a ban on the popularization of such services will come into force. This was announced on Monday, February 5, by the press service of Roskomnadzor.

The agency recalled that VPN services are a means of bypassing access blocks that are prohibited in Russia, if their use does not restrict access to prohibited resources.

From March 1, 2024, a rule will be introduced that will limit access to materials that popularize such means.

Earlier, the head of the Safe Internet League, Ekaterina Mizulina, denied media reports that wrote with reference to her about the possible imminent blocking of VPN services on Russian territory. She suggested that a certain phrase had been taken from her statements and used out of context, resulting in misinformation.

Vedomosti, citing statistics from an international research company, wrote that in 2023, Russians most often downloaded VPN services in the Google Play and App Store app stores – this was done about 160 million times.
