Roshydromet recorded an acceleration of the accumulation of greenhouse gases in Russia

In the Russian atmosphere in 2022, the concentration of greenhouse gases began to grow faster, primarily carbon dioxide (CO2) and methane (CH4). This is stated in the report of Roshydromet on the climate in the country for the past year, reports RBC with a link to the document.

Data on greenhouse gas concentrations are collected at five stations based on measurements in the surface layer of the atmosphere. Three stations are located in the Arctic zone (in Teriberka, Tiksi and Novy Port), two are in the Central region of the European part of Russia (in Obninsk and the Prioksko-Terrasny biosphere reserve near Moscow). The concentration of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere is measured in parts per million or parts per billion. For example, if the concentration of CO2 was 422 ppm, then its density in the air is 422 particles per 1 ppm.

According to Roshydromet, in 2022 the level of CO2 concentration in the atmosphere of northern latitudes reached another maximum. The average annual value at the stations in Teriberka and Tiksi exceeded 422 ppm, and the maximum concentrations for the year were close to 430 ppm. In general, the concentration of CO2 over the past year increased by 3.4–3.5 ppm, which is higher than the average global growth rate over the previous ten years. This is also well above the global growth rate for 2021 (2.5 ppm).

The average annual concentration of methane at the Russian northern stations also reached a record, approaching 2020 ppb. Roshydromet clarifies that the upward trend in CH4 growth has been recorded since 2019. In 2022, there was a significant increase in methane concentration at the station in Teriberka (by 20 ppb per year), but its growth slowed down at the station in Tiksi.

According to the report of Roshydromet, the increase in natural emissions may be caused by climate warming. What leads to an increase in the growth rate of methane concentration has not been established. To reduce risks, Roshydromet advises to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. To do this, according to the department, it is necessary to reduce the share of hydrocarbon fuels, and also need “a focus on sustainable agriculture, energy and resource-efficient economy.”

International Energy Agency (IEA) reportedthat in 2022, global energy carbon emissions increased by only 0.9%, by 321 million tons. However, total emissions have reached a new record of 36.8 billion tons. Emissions increased slightly in 2022, according to the IEA, and this is largely due to the growing popularity of cleaner, including renewable, energy sources.
