The date of Russia’s withdrawal from the International Space Station (ISS) project will depend on the technical condition of the station, said Sergey Krikalev, executive director of Roscosmos for manned programs. transmits RIA Novosti agency. In March, the former head of Roskosmos, Dmitry Rogozin, warned of the “collapse” of the ISS until 2030. The fact is that the station has a lifespan of 15 years, and it has been operating since 1998. Russia had government permission to work on the ISS until 2024, he noted.
At the end of July, former Deputy Prime Minister Yury Borisov, who headed Roskosmos, announced that Russia would leave the ISS after 2024, but he did not give an exact date and only specified that this process could take up to two years. Borisov also noted that after withdrawing from the project, Russia will begin to develop its own orbital station.
Earlier, Vedomosti’s interlocutors said that Russia’s withdrawal from the ISS after 2024 does not mean some distant date – 2028 or 2030, but rather 2025. Previously, NASA representatives did not rule out that the operation of the station could last up to 2028 and even 2031. Among the partners in the ISS project, an agreement has now been reached to operate the station until 2024, and there are also preliminary agreements to send a Russian cosmonaut on an American spacecraft to the ISS in 2024, says Vedomosti’s source.
