Gas in the country became the most expensive in Europe
Almost a week after Russia’s decision to include four former Ukrainian regions in its composition, Moldova decided to respond to the situation. The Russian ambassador was summoned to the Moldovan Foreign Ministry, where they were going to inform him that “Moldova confirms the consistent support of Ukraine’s efforts to restore its sovereignty and territorial integrity within its internationally recognized borders.”
The country decided to testify its position after it once again failed to agree with Russia on payment for gas, but received assurances from Romania in providing assistance with firewood.
Prior to this, the republic had been butting heads with Gazprom for more than a week, demanding a reduction in the price of contractual gas and an increase in its supplies. At the same time, the Moldovagaz company repeatedly violated the terms of payment for the supplied gas under agreements signed earlier with Russia.
Every month, instead of the due payments, Gazprom receives from Moldova a “package of proposals” to revise the terms of the contract on favorable terms for it, and each time it has to “bring” the Moldovan government to its senses in fact by blackmail: “don’t pay, we will turn off the gas.”
This time, the Russian gas company again spread the message that “reserves the right to stop deliveries in case of violation of the payment deadlines until October 20, 2022 and may terminate the contract at any time due to a gross violation of the terms for concluding an agreement on the settlement of the historical debt of JSC Moldovagaz “. Instead of paying the debt, the Russian ambassador was summoned, who was vaguely hinted that Moldova was ready to support Ukraine on all fronts…
The assistance offered by neighboring Romania in the form of 130 thousand cubic meters of firewood, declared as an “element of European solidarity”, is unlikely to save Moldova. After all, in better times, in the presence of gas, the country consumed about one million warehouse meters of wood during the cold season.
Meanwhile, in Moldova, since October 1, the cost of gas has increased so much that it has become the largest in Europe. Now one cubic meter of gas costs the consumer 29 lei, 26 bani per cubic meter (more than 1.5 euros), a year ago the cost of gas in the country was 4.2 lei (0.22 euros) per cubic meter. In neighboring Romania, gas now costs 68 cents per cubic meter, even in Ukraine, “blue fuel” costs consumers 27 cents. The average price in Europe is 1.4 euros per cubic meter.
Not only gas in pipes and burners has risen in price, but also methane at gas stations. It got to the point that methane for cars for the first time became more expensive than gasoline and diesel fuel. Therefore, the queues for gas stations simply disappeared …
And on October 6, the citizens of Moldova were waiting for a new “gift”: electricity suddenly rose in price – the tariff increased immediately by 22% (from 2.64 to 3.23 lei (from 0.14 euros to 0.17) per 1 kWh.
Prices for everything are now rising in Moldova. According to WB experts, in 2022 inflation in Moldova will be 30.1%. Support for Ukraine is expensive for the country.
