Romania is preparing to train Ukrainian pilots to fly F-16 fighter jets. Appropriate documents will soon be signed allowing the start of education on Romanian territory, Romanian Prime Minister Marcel Colacu said in an interview with the Financial Times.
“I expect that protocols for pilots will be signed in the next few days. This is the last obstacle on this path… According to our information, all the logistical aspects of the training have been prepared,” the prime minister said.
He also stressed that the increase in spending on the military sphere and infrastructure in connection with the situation in Ukraine has a negative impact on the country’s budget.
According to the newspaper, Marcel Colacu will meet with representatives of the European Union in Brussels this week to discuss measures aimed at reducing the funding gap.
“We had to redistribute the budget in order to assist in deliveries to Ukraine … These are unexpected costs … Therefore, we will need to make changes to the tax code,” the prime minister added in an interview with the newspaper.
Earlier, the Financial Times reported on the plans of a coalition of 11 countries to start training Ukrainian pilots on F-16 fighter jets in August. This coalition includes Denmark, the Netherlands, Canada, Belgium, Norway, Poland, Luxembourg, Portugal, Romania, Sweden and the UK.
