The tragedy that happened to Roman Kostomarov left no one indifferent. After serious pneumonia and mechanical ventilation, the athlete’s hands and both feet were amputated. Now he walks on prosthetics. And every day he takes a new step towards making his life full.
One of these steps was a public appearance at a motivational meeting at the Chamber of Commerce and Industry, where Kostomarov shared revelations about his current life. The skater looked quite confident in himself, walked on prosthetics without limping, and with his bionic hand shook hands with everyone. I started the conversation with a joke. “Language is not my strong point. My strong point is my strong point. Well, now my strong point is no longer my strong point. Therefore, I will try to make sure that language is my strong point,” the speaker-athlete smiled.
Of course, those present were interested in how Roman overcame difficulties, because coming to terms with a new life is not so easy.
“The main thing for me now is to watch my children grow up. It’s just happiness. The first time in the hospital, when I had already come to my senses after all the medications and realized what had happened, for a long time it was horror and an absolute unwillingness to live. But, fortunately, there was a wife and brother nearby, who said: “What about the children? You have someone to live for.”
And now I am so happy when I see how my son is growing, how he is a hooligan. How my daughter grows, how she learns tennis. How they hug you, how they kiss you, how they say that you are “Daddy Robot 3000.” Why three thousand, I don’t know.
The son asks: “Dad, is it possible to make your head rotate 360 degrees?” I answer: “Son, what are you saying, this is too much.”
Of course, life has changed dramatically. First of all, I was worried about how the meeting with my children would go. I didn’t want to leave the hospital until I got back on my feet and had prosthetics.
We sent the children on vacation with their grandmother for three weeks, so that my wife and I could adapt during this time to everyday life and to a new life in general. Oksana supported me from the very beginning. She was allowed into the hospital. Her words: “Believe in yourself” and “We will walk this path together.”
According to Kostomarov, he also had concerns about how society would accept him.
“At one time it was scary to appear in public; a complex appeared that could not be avoided. And it was important for me to overcome it. I then said to my brother: “Denis, how can I go out to people now?” And he answered me: “Roman, what are you talking about! You are a hero who overcame death.”
I am grateful to everyone who helped me. The doctors did everything they could, and so did my family and friends. I started training while still lying in bed. Then confidence appeared…
How does Kostomarov live now? According to the athlete, he simply has Napoleonic plans.
“Of course, I won’t be able to skate like that anymore, but I plan to go on the ice. There are just a lot of problems that come with it. A skate and a boot are a specific thing. This is the work of the ankle and, in general, all the muscles that are involved in the boot, a very subtle feeling of the rib. And these sensations are missing now.
You will need to get a larger boot because the foot is now carbon and it doesn’t fit into the boot as easily as a normal foot. Our foot has the ability to compress and expand; carbon does not do this. We must try to get on the ice. I think it will work out, but in a crooked way.
Today I’m trying something new. Life doesn’t end, you can move on and do something else. The most important thing is to be alive, and then everything will depend on you. You never know what will happen tomorrow. So appreciate every moment of life and enjoy it.”
