Russian Olympic Committee (ROC) commented today’s recommendation of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) on the conditions for the admission of Russian athletes to competitions. In the ROC, they were called an admission of “their own mistake”, and the conditions of return were unacceptable.
“We regard today’s decisions of the IOC Executive Committee as recognition of their own mistake made at the time of the adoption of the recommendations on February 28, 2022 on the non-admission of Russian and Belarusian athletes to participate in international competitions,”— declared OKR. At the same time, the announced parameters and criteria for the return of Russians to international competitions in the ROC were called absolutely unacceptable.
IOC offered allow Russian and Belarusian athletes to participate in tournaments in a neutral status (without a flag, anthem and other state symbols) and only on condition that they do not represent law enforcement agencies or the armed forces, and are not engaged in “support for hostilities”. The recommendations apply only to individual disciplines – there is no question of admission to team competitions. At the same time, the recommendations do not apply to the 2024 Olympics – a decision on it will be made later.
The criterion on the non-admission of athletes who are registered in the military and law enforcement agencies or have contractual relations with them is intended to split the community of Russian athletes, dividing them into “permissible” and “others”, and to damage the Russian sports industry as a whole, said the OKR .
“The current admission parameters will in no way contribute to the return of Russian and Belarusian athletes to participate in international competitions,” the ROC commented, calling the decisions of the IOC executive committee “nothing more than a farce” and promising to continue contacts with colleagues from Lausanne.
