Scientists from Italy have named risk factors for developing colon cancer in young people
Scientists from the University of Milan in Italy predict an increase in mortality from bowel cancer among young Europeans by 2024. The main risk factors for developing this disease were obesity, diabetes and excessive alcohol consumption. The study results were published in the Annals of Oncology.
The number of deaths from colorectal cancer among people aged 25 to 49 in the UK could increase by 26% for men and almost 39% for women compared to 2018, scientists say. A similar trend is also predicted for Italy (an increase of 1.5% in men and 2.6% in women), Spanish and Polish men (an increase in mortality of 5.5% and 5.9%, respectively), as well as for German women (an increase of 7.2%).
Important factors contributing to the increasing incidence of bowel cancer among young people are overweight, obesity and associated diseases such as hyperglycemia and diabetes. Scientists also note an increase in alcohol consumption and a decrease in physical activity as additional reasons for this phenomenon.
At the same time, the researchers calculated that from 2018 to 2024, the total number of deaths from cancer of all types in Europe and the UK will decrease by 6.5% among men and by 4% among women.
