The reason for the blackening of gilded crosses and domes may be a violation of the gilding technology, says Olga Kryukova, head of the architectural and restoration workshop that conducts design and research work at the Alexander Nevsky Lavra. Another reason, according to a specialist, may be a long period of non-renewal of gilding. She clarified that this cannot happen in a matter of weeks or even months.
At the beginning of the year, the Kyiv authorities seized the Refectory Church from the canonical Ukrainian Church, as well as the Assumption Cathedral, the main temple of the Lavra.
The abbot of the Lavra, Metropolitan Pavel (Lebed), said that the crosses on the Refectory Church of the Lavra had turned black. He believes that this is a sign from above that it is necessary to “protect the holy catholic apostolic church.”
