According to the report, which was prepared by an independent commission and presented at a press conference in Lisbon, over the past 70 years in Portugal, about 5,000 children have been victims of sexual abuse in the institutions of the Catholic Church.
At the same time, the head of the commission, psychiatrist Pedro Strecht, stressed that the announced figure is “the smallest possible number”, since the exact number of victims of crimes cannot be counted.
It is noted that most of these crimes are committed in Catholic seminaries, orphanages, schools and sports facilities. In more than 70% of cases, crimes are committed by clergy.
