Repairs of the Lefortovo Tunnel in Moscow have begun, said Deputy Mayor of Moscow for Housing and Communal Services and Landscaping Pyotr Biryukov. Repair work is planned to be completed in the second quarter of 2024 (April-June).
“Special attention is paid to the maintenance of bridge structures; all objects undergo regular inspections; if necessary, a decision is made to carry out major or current repairs. This year we will renovate the longest tunnel in the capital, Lefortovo, and we plan to complete the work in the second quarter,” said Pyotr Biryukov, his words published on mos.ru.
Repairs are carried out at night so as not to disturb motorists. Traffic is being gradually blocked in one outer lane. Specialists will replace the old cladding of the tunnel walls. It will be replaced with a new pediment type. The fire extinguishing systems in the tunnel will be updated and modern detectors will be installed.
The Lefortovo Tunnel is part of the Third Transport Ring (TTK). It passes under the Yauza River and Lefortovo Park. Its length is about 3.2 km. The media called it the “tunnel of death” due to numerous accidents.
