Aleksey Melnikov, executive secretary of the public monitoring commission (POC) of Moscow, said that human rights activists visited SIZO-1 “Matrosskaya Tishina” to verify information about the “torture chamber of horror” reported by the media. Mr. Melnikov assured that the planned repairs were going on in the cells.
Previously “Moscow’s comsomolets” said that in SIZO-1, the accused and suspects are kept in unsanitary conditions, and in one of the “torture cells”, where there is no plumbing, and there is mold on the wall and ceiling, the director of the ANO “Museum of Slavic Culture” Anton Golubtsov is being held.
“Thinking about how we could have overlooked such a terrible place, we immediately left with my colleague Bogdan Ebert to the isolation ward. In short, in the words of Anton Golubtsov himself: “I spent a day in that cell (number 307), the cell is tired, but it doesn’t look like it was presented in the media,” Alexei Melnikov wrote in his Telegram channel.
The secretary of the POC claims that in Moscow there is a problem with the “overlimit” of people in pre-trial detention centers, and therefore the repair of the cells is being carried out gradually. “Two cameras have been repaired, work has been accepted, the next cameras are being repaired,” Mr. Melnikov explained.
He added that members of the PMC talked to the staff of the pre-trial detention center, “studied the available documentation.” Aleksey Melnikov said that Anton Golubtsov stayed in the 307th cell for about a day, then they started the planned repairs, and the arrested person was transferred to another cell. The human rights activist’s post is accompanied by a photo of the cell where Mr. Golubtsov is being held, as well as the 307th cell.
