This is not the first case: old people abandoned in a foreign land have become a problem

The son threw a wheelchair with an old woman under the doors of the Russian consulate. Mexico served as a transit point for this relocant from the Russian Federation on his way to the United States, where he at the same time dumped all the excess cargo, including his immobile parent.

Alas, having received publicity, this terrible act revealed a whole layer of similar cases.

– Here in Tijuana (a city on the Pacific coast bordering San Diego, USA – auto) supposedly there is a corridor for illegal refugees, says Alejandro, a resident of Mexico City. “Everyone has heard about this, but you can’t take someone’s word for it in such a matter, it’s not legal.” However, people are still trying to get into the US, and so are the Russians. But in the end they accumulate in Acapulco, where a whole ghetto has already formed.

– And there are many Russians there?

– Enough. And they really have a problem with the elderly. Acapulco is now the cheapest resort within close proximity to the US corridor, but it is still expensive. And if an elderly relative needs not only a roof over his head and food, but also care, medicine and all that, then you will definitely go broke there. So they threw the Russian grandmother back. It’s good that they brought them to the consulate in Mexico City, and some are thrown right in Tijuana. Wheelchairs are not allowed through the corridor.

– Do the Russians throw too?!

– I don’t know this for sure. But if you come to Tijuana, you will see old people begging from all over the world.

What a resident of Mexico City described is indeed very similar to the story of 73-year-old Russian pensioner Valentina Kotova, who was found under the window of the Russian consul in Mexico City. Due to problems with her spine, she uses a wheelchair, but she has not lost her Russian citizenship, and therefore her pension. According to Alexander Ivashchenko, the Russian consul in Mexico, who sent Kotova home, the pensioner arrived in Mexico a year ago with her son and daughter-in-law, who were planning to illegally move to the United States, having previously sold all their property in their homeland. But they were unable to cross the border, and they settled in Mexico, entering the resettlement program in the States under the program for Ukrainian refugees (their son’s wife has Ukrainian citizenship). And as soon as the program “worked,” the couple found the ballast in the person of an old mother in their new homeland too burdensome.

Thanks to Consul Alexander Ivashchenko, the “Russian grandmother” Valentina Kotova has already returned to her homeland, all of Russia has learned about her, and many are ready to help.

According to official data, Kotova has no relatives left in Russia. But, as often happens in such cases, there were those on the RuNet who knew the family. According to these users, the head of the family promised his mother in the USA her own house if she sold her apartment in Cherepovets.

“They told Granny that they would only be passing through Mexico, and she would live in beautiful America, where she would have her own home,” says Elena, who called herself “the Kotovs’ neighbor.” – But on the spot, apparently, something went wrong: “America the Beautiful” was frozen for a whole year. And, apparently, my mother became a burden. It’s not suitable for a new life in a wheelchair.

“Unfortunately, now this happens all the time,” employees of the Russian consulate in Turkey share unofficially. “The Relkants convince elderly parents to move abroad, and to do this, sell their housing and everything in their home country. Many older parents sincerely want to help their children move. They are divided into those who are ready to help in any way possible, but are not ready to go themselves. And for those who are ready to go to nowhere in their old age, because then there is no need to leave a single unsold corner in Russia. Usually relocants believe in some of their plans, but they are not always realized. At least right away. And then old parents are left at transit points like Turkey and the Emirates, in cheap rented housing, with the words “wait.” And they themselves leave for their final destination “for reconnaissance.” And they disappear for a long time, leaving their parents without a language, without money, without medical care in a foreign country. And some of them, following an old Soviet habit, first of all find the telephone number of the Russian embassy and ask for help.
