The Central Election Commission has completed the process of registering candidates for the Russian presidential elections. Four candidates will compete for the post of head of state: self-nominated Vladimir Putin, Nikolai Kharitonov from the Communist Party of the Russian Federation, Leonid Slutsky from the Liberal Democratic Party and Vladislav Davankov from the New People.
In total, 33 people planned to participate in the elections: 9 from parties and 24 self-nominated candidates. Only 15 people provided documents to the CEC. Four of them, as reported by the Central Election Commission of the Russian Federation, were unable to fulfill all the requirements, so the number of applicants was reduced to 11.
Three candidates – Sergei Baburin (Russian All-People’s Union), Irina Sviridova (Democratic Party of Russia) and Andrei Bogdanov (Russian Freedom and Justice Party) – refused to participate in the elections at the stage of submitting signatures to the Central Election Commission of the Russian Federation. Self-nominees of the Russian Council and Anatoly Batashev dropped out of the race due to an insufficient number of signatures and the absence of some documents. The Central Electoral Commission refused to register two candidates – Sergei Malinkovich (Communists of Russia) and Boris Nadezhdin (Civil Initiative), explaining this by a high percentage of incorrect signatures. Mr. Nadezhdin intends to appeal the refusal to register in the Supreme Court.
