American company Redbox would like to acquire Netflix’s DVD delivery business. About it informs The Hollywood Reporter, citing a statement from Redbox owner Bill Rowhan.
Redbox approached Netflix several times to buy the DVD business, but was always turned down. Mr. Rouhan hopes that this time may be different. Netflix representatives told THR that they have no plans to sell the disc delivery business and that it will be closed. In this case, Redbox will lose a competitor.
Netflix has been delivering DVDs since 1998. During this time, Netflix has shipped over 5.2 billion discs and 40 million subscribers to the service. In 2022, the DVD business generated $146 million for Netflix, down $40 million from 2021. The last CD will be shipped on September 29, 2023. Redbox is the leader in the US DVD and Blu-ray rental market with over 32,000 retail outlets.
