RBC: the authorities are going to extend the life of obsolete landfills for another three years

The government is going to extend the operation of obsolete municipal solid waste (MSW) landfills until January 1, 2026. The corresponding amendments were sent to the State Duma. This was reported RBC with reference to documents.
According to RBC, the decision applies to landfills that were put into operation before 2019. The government allowed waste to be buried there until January 1, 2023, but in 25% of the regions they could not create the necessary infrastructure to open new landfills, writes RBC. As a result, the regional authorities applied to the Ministry of Natural Resources with a request for a delay.
“The government supported the proposal of the regions to extend the MSW facilities, which expire on January 1, 2023, taking into account the schedule for the commissioning of new MSW processing, disposal and disposal facilities,” said Marta Galicheva, a representative of Deputy Prime Minister Victoria Abramchenko. According to her, this extension will be one-time.
The day before, State Duma deputy Dmitry Kobylkin reported that regional authorities were worried about the situation with landfills in the regions. According to him, they note that the regions do not have the necessary infrastructure to close old landfills. “And the reasons are different for everyone: from constituent financial resources to insufficient work in this placement,”— wrote Mr Kobylkin.
In 2019, Russia passed the garbage reform. According to it, landfills that are not included in the state register of waste disposal sites should have been closed in the country by 2023. In the summer, the Ministry of Natural Resources proposed extending their work until 2025.
