No one in their country knows the names of modern world-class Russian scientists
What percentage of Russians would like to see their children as researchers in the future, whether it is necessary to keep the Academy of Sciences, sociologists and psychologists found out on the basis of an all-Russian survey.
As MK was told at the Institute of Psychology of the Russian Academy of Sciences, the telephone survey was conducted in August. It was important for researchers to find out how great the interest in science is, how well they are informed about the achievements of scientists, whether they consider science to be in demand by government and business.
The results of a survey of 1,600 people showed that the interest in science in our country is still high. It is declared by about two-thirds of Russians, and among citizens with higher education – by three-quarters. At the same time, among older people from 45 to 54 years old, this interest is higher than among young people aged 18-24 years (71% and 61%, respectively).
It is sad that almost half of the respondents – 42% – could not name a single major scientific achievement of the last 10 years, and only about 9% could name world-class Russian scientists living today.
However, 86% of respondents believe that science and technology make life easier and more convenient, 83% trust Russian developers. At the same time, among young people aged 25 to 34, this level is slightly lower – 76%, and in the group over 65 years – 88%.
As for the level of trust in the Russian Academy of Sciences, it is 67%. Respondents aged 55-64 (72%) trust the RAS the most, and respondents aged 25-34 (62%) the least. Among women, there are more trusting academies than among men. The main activities of this organization are considered by many to be the expansion of knowledge about the world and man, applied research, as well as the definition of scientific policy in the country. 98% of respondents spoke about the need to preserve the RAS as the main scientific body of the country, and more than half of the respondents said they would like to see their children as scientists.
