Rare algae from the Ice Age found in the Moscow region

A relict algae was discovered in a reservoir near Moscow. The thinnest naiad existed on the planet back in the days when mammoths and woolly rhinoceroses walked the earth.
As MK found out, specialists from the Ministry of Ecology, while monitoring rare species of flora and fauna in a reservoir in the urban district of Orekhovo-Zuevo, found a very rare aquatic plant. We are talking about the finest naiad, which is listed in the Red Book of Russia in category 1 of rarity status. It is also called the finest caulinia – it is a species of the water-colored family.
The find can rightfully be called a relict; this amazing plant dates back to the Pleistocene – the so-called Ice Age. According to botanists, the thinnest naiad is a species with a broken range, most of which is located in Russia. This algae is an annual, it has extremely brittle stems and narrow-linear leaves, finely toothed along the edges. The naiad prefers to settle on the sandy bottom of well-warmed reservoirs at a depth of up to 1.5 meters. It is extremely demanding regarding the purity and transparency of water.
In the Moscow region, a naiad was discovered for the first time in history. In Russia, this species can also be found in the northwestern European part of the country, the Republic of Mordovia, the south of the Urals and Siberia, as well as in the south of the Far East. It is assumed that the seeds of caulinia could have been brought by birds on their feathers or by fishermen in fishing nets from neighboring bodies of water. Experts will conduct additional research to identify possible algae growth in other places.
