The head of Chechnya, Ramzan Kadyrov, recalled that on February 23 – when Russia celebrates Defender of the Fatherland Day – in 1944, an operation began to resettle residents of the Chechen-Ingush Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic to Kazakhstan and Siberia. Mr. Kadyrov called it “a flagrant crime against the Chechen and Ingush peoples.”
“By order of the accursed Joseph Stalin, our people were subjected to a horrific genocide – mass deportation to Siberia and Kazakhstan. The reason was the unfounded accusation of collaboration with the Nazi occupiers. It was only a cover for the perpetration of massacres against entire peoples, ”the head of Chechnya wrote in his Telegram-channel.
The head of Chechnya also noted that dozens of Chechens took part in the battles during the Great Patriotic War. “But all this was not taken into account by the authorities in their irrepressible desire to destroy the freedom-loving and proud people. Thousands died along the way, hundreds of thousands died from cold, hunger and disease, many years of humiliation and lack of rights for a completely far-fetched reason, ”he said.
The deportation of more than 500 thousand people from the Chechen-Ingush Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic continued from February 23 to March 9, 1944. The operation called “Lentil” was prepared in secret and became one of the largest ethnic deportations in the history of the Soviet Union.
