British monarch touched by public support

Britain’s King Charles III is doing “extremely well” after being diagnosed with cancer, Queen Camilla said. The Queen described her husband’s condition as “extremely good under the circumstances” in her first public appearance since the monarch’s cancer diagnosis was announced.

Queen Camilla said her husband, who had his first treatment earlier this week, had been “very touched” by all the messages of support he had received from the public.

According to The Guardian, the 75-year-old king has been spending time at Sandringham in Norfolk since his diagnosis, which Buckingham Palace announced on Monday evening. The form of the cancer was not disclosed.

The Queen left King Charles at Sandringham to fulfill her royal engagement at Salisbury Cathedral. Among the first people she met were paramedics from Wiltshire Ambulance Service on Thursday.

Ben Abbott, 40, an intensive care paramedic, said: “I really hope His Majesty is doing well ma’am, we’re all very sad to hear this news.”

The Queen replied: “Well, in the circumstances he is doing very well, he is very touched by all the letters and messages that the public are sending from everywhere – it is very pleasing.”

The king has postponed all public appearances but continues to work behind the scenes on his famous red boxes of government papers.

His son, the Prince of Wales, may act as his father’s representative at events, but no events are currently planned.

On Wednesday, Downing Street took the unusual step of confirming that Rishi Sunak would call the king following a disclosure agreement with the palace.

The British Prime Minister’s official spokesman said: “In general, we do not and do not intend to make a habit of commenting on the Prime Minister’s conversations with the King. But in this particular case, we agreed with the palace to confirm that they would speak on the phone later.”

It was originally intended that the official weekly audience between the head of state and the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, which is usually held in person and forms part of the monarch’s core constitutional duties, would be conducted by telephone.

However, a palace source clarified that this would be a personal call from the Prime Minister to wish Charles III all the best and a speedy recovery, rather than an audience.

No audience was scheduled for the next two weeks, partly to comply with rules set by the late Queen Elizabeth II for this time of year, but also to give the king a chance to recover from a benign prostate enlargement procedure.
