Pyotr Biryukov: Ice on Moscow reservoirs began to melt and it is dangerous to go out on it

The onset of warming has accelerated the melting of ice on the reservoirs of Moscow. In this regard, the capital’s rescuers have stepped up patrols at water bodies.

Rescuers have enough work – despite the fact that the sun is warming up more and more, and the ice on the rivers and in the ponds is getting thinner, there are still those who want to fish or just walk on the icy surface. So, the other day, employees of the Kozhukhovo search and rescue station (PSS) had to get a man out of the water who fell into a hole on the Moskva River near Kolomenskaya Embankment.

The 62-year-old Muscovite was handed over to doctors for assistance. But everything could have ended much more tragically if the eyewitnesses of the incident had not called rescuers.

Now the employees of 25 metropolitan PSS of the Moscow City Search and Rescue Service at water bodies are working in an enhanced mode. And the matter is not limited to patrolling reservoirs.

“Ice thickness measurements are regularly carried out, places of unauthorized access to the ice, fishing and skating rinks on natural reservoirs are under constant supervision. Rescuers are taking preventive measures, in particular, talking with vacationers near rivers and reservoirs, identifying unaccompanied children, ”said Pyotr Biryukov, Deputy Mayor of Moscow for Housing and Public Utilities and Improvement.

The deputy mayor urged Muscovites not to go out on the fragile spring ice in any case, and also to carefully monitor their children and pets while walking near the water.
