Russian President Vladimir Putin told how he brought an icon with the face of St. Elizabeth Feodorovna Romanova from New York to his residence in Novo-Ogarevo, where the princess once lived. The President called the “return” of the Grand Duchess amazing and symbolic.
“I want this icon with the relics (of St. Elizabeth Feodorovna –“Ъ”) presented by the primate of a foreign church in New York. I brought her here, set her up at home and didn’t immediately realize that she (Elizaveta Fedorovna –“Ъ”) returned to her home. The President showed his icon families of the victims in the Northern Military District of Heroes of Russia after the Christmas liturgy in the house church of the residence in Novo-Ogarevo.
Before the revolution, the president’s residence near Moscow was the estate of the Grand Duke, Elizabeth Feodorovna Romanova’s husband, Sergei Alexandrovich Romanov. Elizavet Romanova was killed the night after the execution of the imperial family on July 18, 1918. In 1992, the Russian Orthodox Church (ROC) canonized the princess.
