In Russia, people of non-traditional sexual orientation are tolerated – no one restricts them. Russian President Vladimir Putin announced this on Tuesday, February 20.
The Russian leader emphasized that “we are quite tolerant towards people of non-traditional sexual orientation,” however, “we just don’t stick it out and don’t think it’s right to stick it out, let all adults live as they want, no one limits them.”
At the same time, Vladimir Putin emphasized that “as far as children are concerned, I have already said many times – don’t touch the children.”
In 2021, the European Court of Human Rights demanded that Russia legalize same-sex unions, citing the European Convention for the Protection of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms, which talks about the right to respect for private and family life. The Russian Federation, as a member of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, had to implement the organization’s resolution of 2018, demanding that laws be changed so that same-sex couples would receive recognition and protection of their unions.
Russia refused to implement this decision of the ECHR, and the international public movement of LGBT people was recognized as an extremist organization and banned in the Russian Federation. At the same time, the government commission on legislative activities refused to support the draft amendments on criminal liability for repeated cases of LGBT propaganda.
