Russian President Vladimir Putin signed law, which introduces life imprisonment for treason and toughens responsibility for terrorism. In addition, punishment is introduced for assistance in the execution of decisions of international organizations and foreign government agencies on the criminal prosecution of representatives of the Russian authorities or the military. Previously, those convicted under Article 275 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (treason) were given up to 20 years in prison. Under Article 205 (terrorist act), the maximum sentence has been increased from 15 to 20 years in prison.
The law provides for an increase in the minimum liability for recruitment or involvement in terrorism from five to seven years in prison. Under the article on the organization of a terrorist society and participation in it (Article 205.4 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation), a term of 10 to 15 years can be threatened (now from five to 10 years).
For committing an act of international terrorism (Article 361 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation), it will be possible to receive a prison term of 12 years up to life imprisonment (now the minimum punishment is 10 years in prison).
The Criminal Code is also supplemented by a new article 284.3 on “Providing assistance in the execution of decisions of international organizations in which the Russian Federation does not participate, or foreign government agencies.” For assistance in the execution of the decisions of such organizations, as well as decisions on the criminal prosecution of Russian officials or the military (including those participating in volunteer formations), a fine of 300 thousand rubles is introduced. up to one 1 million rubles. or imprisonment for up to five years with the deprivation of the right to hold certain positions or engage in certain activities for the same period.
