Putin signed a law on confiscation of property for fakes about the army – Kommersant

Russian President Vladimir Putin signed law, which allows the confiscation of property for crimes against the security of the country. Among other things, the measure can be applied for spreading fakes about the Russian army. The law will come into force 10 days after its official publication.
Amendments are being made to a number of articles of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation. Thus, the application of Article 104.1 on confiscation of property now extends to a number of articles. Under two articles – on the dissemination of fakes about the army (Article 207.3) and on calls for activities directed against the security of the state (Article 280.4) – it is now possible to seize assets if they were obtained as a result of committing crimes. The measure will be applied if the crime was committed for mercenary reasons.
In addition, confiscation now also applies to property that was used or intended for crimes against the security of Russia. More than 30 articles of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation fall under this concept.
Also, new qualifying criteria have been added to Article 280.4 (calls for activities against state security): for mercenary reasons or for hire, as well as for reasons of political, national, religious hatred or enmity.
The law expands the list of articles for which those convicted will be deprived. The measure will be applied to those convicted of spreading fake news about the army, discrediting it, calling for extremism, violating the territorial integrity of the Russian Federation, activities directed against the security of the Russian Federation and for a number of other crimes.
The bill was submitted to the State Duma on January 22, its authors were 395 deputies, led by the speaker of the chamber, Vyacheslav Volodin. The State Duma adopted it on January 31, the Federation Council on February 7.
