Putin proposed doubling the damage threshold for several criminal articles

Russian President Vladimir Putin, speaking at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum, proposed at least doubling the thresholds for large and especially large property damage under several criminal articles.

“For more than ten years, we have not changed the thresholds for large and especially large property damage that is not related to theft, as well as for violations of copyright and related rights. I would like to pay special attention to the latter, since now foreign companies themselves refuse to supply software and other services,” the head of state explained.

Vladimir Putin recommended raising the damage thresholds for the economic elements of the crime, where imprisonment is not applied. He clarified what he meant by avoiding disclosure under securities laws.

According to the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation, a large amount of damage according to the main offenses of theft is 250 thousand rubles, especially large – 1 million rubles. In case of violation of copyright and related rights, damage is considered major if the cost of copies of works or phonograms exceeds 100 thousand rubles, and in an especially large amount – 1 million rubles.
