Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a law criminalizing the desecration of the St. George ribbon. The document also secured her the status of a symbol of the military glory of Russia and the Victory of the Soviet people in the Great Patriotic War. According to the law, the St. George ribbon can only be used for the purpose of historical memory – during memorial events in honor of military glory, as well as for military-patriotic and spiritual and moral education of Russian citizens.
Public desecration of the St. George ribbon will be punished by a fine of 3 million rubles. or imprisonment for up to three years. The same actions on the Internet or committed by a group of persons by prior agreement are punishable by a fine of 2-5 million rubles. or imprisonment for up to five years.
