Russian President Vladimir Putin conveyed congratulations to Pope Francis on the occasion of the 10th anniversary of his election to the papal throne, Russian Ambassador to the Vatican Alexander Avdeev said.
“Today we conveyed the corresponding message from Russian President Vladimir Putin,” the diplomat said (quote according to TASS).
Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Rus’ also congratulated Pope Francis. “In the current difficult circumstances, you are making a significant contribution to the preaching of the gospel of Christ and paying attention to the development of interfaith interaction,” — noted in congratulations.
Argentine Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergolio was elected the new pope and chose the name Francis in 2013. He succeeded Benedict XVI, who after the abdication became known as His Holiness Benedict XVI. Benedict became the first pontiff in 600 years to abdicate. The ex-pope died on December 31, 2022.
