Russian President Vladimir Putin said that in 2023 the poverty level in the country has reached a historic low. At the same time, he emphasized the need to continue work in this direction in order to ultimately reduce the indicators to zero.
“In general, this word is not very good – poverty, but, nevertheless, such indicators exist. There will be a historic low in 2023. But those people who still live below the poverty line – for them this is an empty phrase. We need to reduce this figure to minimum values, we need to strive for zero,” said Vladimir Putin, speaking at a meeting of the Council for Strategic Development and National Projects (quote from TASS).
Vladimir Putin called the creation of an economy of qualified personnel and good wages the key factor in overcoming poverty. “Today in Russia there are unique market opportunities for opening modern production facilities and modernizing existing enterprises, to create new, well-paid jobs. Our economy must become an economy of qualified personnel and good, high salaries. This is precisely the key to increasing citizens’ incomes and overcoming the problems of poverty,” he emphasized.
According to Rosstat, in January-September 2023, the number of Russians with incomes below the poverty line amounted to 16 million people, or 11.1% of the population, which is lower than the same indicators in 2022 (17.2 million people and 11.8%). Directly in the third quarter, the number of poor people amounted to 14.8 million people, or 10.2% of the country’s population.
