President Vladimir Putin, speaking to university students in the Kaliningrad region, spoke about demographic problems in Russia. He noted that in order to achieve stable population growth in the country, it is necessary for families to raise at least three children. However, according to the president, due to various reasons, couples begin to think about children too late.

“If two people produce only one, then the population decreases. Even if there are two, it remains on the horizontal bar, and in order to ensure population growth, a minimum of three children is needed. And for this to happen, the family must be born earlier,” the president said.

According to Vladimir Putin, demographic problems may arise, in particular, because society is becoming more educated. “The more educated a society is, the more difficult it is with demographics, because the priorities of a young woman change. 77% of our population wants to get a higher education, 10 years ago it was 50%. First you want to get an education, then a higher education, then take the first steps in your career. And everything is important, everything is necessary, everything seems to be correct. This is called a delayed first child,” he noted.

According to a HSE study, the decision to have a child influences level of family well-being. According to experts, the desire to have a child in most cases has an inverse relationship with family costs and a direct relationship with income. Analysts explained this phenomenon by the fact that spouses with relatively high earnings lose more compared to poor families.

According to Rosstat forecasts, from 2023 to 2027 the birth rate in Russia will decrease from 1244.5 thousand babies to 1140.4 thousand. The figure will begin to grow only in 2028. By the beginning of 2046, Rosstat expects, the country’s population will be 138 million people. As of January 1, 2023, 146 million people lived in Russia.
