President Vladimir Putin signed a decree conferring the rank of Major General of Justice on employee of the Investigative Committee of Russia (ICR) Vladimir Sharaev. The document was published on the official Internet portal legal information.

According to a source close to the TFR RBC, Vladimir Sharaev, as an investigator for particularly important cases, led the investigation into the murder of journalist Anna Politkovskaya. He had been working on the case since 2015, the publication’s interlocutor said, after the retirement of the previous investigator, Petros Gharibyan.

Anna Politkovskaya was shot dead on October 7, 2006, in the elevator of her Moscow building. As part of the case, criminal sentences, including life sentences, were imposed on the organizers and perpetrators of the murder. The person who ordered the murder has not yet been identified. In the fall of 2021, the statute of limitations in this case expired.

In November 2023, ex-Ministry of Internal Affairs officer Sergei Khadzhikurbanov, sentenced to 20 years for organizing the murder of Anna Politkovskaya, was pardoned for participation in a special military operation.
