Russian President Vladimir Putin arrived in Volgograd on the eve of the celebration of the 80th anniversary of the victory in the Battle of Stalingrad, a RIA Novosti correspondent reported.

During the visit, the President will lay a wreath at the Eternal Flame in the Hall of Military Glory in the Battle of Stalingrad museum-reserve on Mamaev Kurgan and will perform at a concert dedicated to the celebration of the victory anniversary.

Vladimir Putin also plans to meet with representatives of youth organizations and speak with Governor of the Volgograd Region Andrey Bocharov.

The Battle of Stalingrad took place from July 17, 1942 to February 2, 1943 on the territory of modern Voronezh, Rostov, Volgograd regions and the Republic of Kalmykia. By February, Soviet troops surrounded the 6th Army of Field Marshal Friedrich Paulus. On February 2, the German group near Stalingrad capitulated.
