Putin appreciated the participation of Russian athletes in the Olympics on the terms of the IOC

President Vladimir Putin called the decision of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to admit Russian athletes to international competitions “a complete perversion of the ideas of the Olympic movement.” The President invited athletes from the Russian Federation to carefully analyze the conditions of the IOC before deciding to participate in international tournaments.
“Everything that international officials are doing in relation to Russian sports is a complete distortion of what the Olympic movement is. International sports officials have become completely dependent on sponsors. If they continue to act like this, they will bury the Olympic movement. Sport is outside of politics, it should unite people,” the president noted during the “Results of the Year.”
According to Vladimir Putin, the athletes themselves, the Ministry of Sports and the Russian Olympic Committee must make an informed decision on participation in international competitions. At the same time, he emphasized that Russian athletes “have been training for years, they are known even without a flag.”
March 28, 2023 IOC recommended allow Russian and Belarusian athletes to participate in international competitions in a neutral status. They were prohibited from using national flags, coats of arms and other symbols at competitions.
On December 8, the IOC announced that eight Russian and three Belarusian athletes had received licenses to participate in the Olympic Games to be held in Paris in 2024. However, on December 14 the committee introduced other figures: six Russian and five Belarusian athletes qualified for the Olympic Games.
