Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a law allowing women with children under four years of age to qualify for parole. The corresponding document was published on portal legal information. Before this, women with a child under three years old could apply for parole.
Now women who have served at least a quarter of their sentence for minor crimes with a child under four years of age in the care of a correctional institution’s children’s home are eligible for parole. In addition, those convicted can have the remainder of their sentence changed to a more lenient one. The law will come into force in 180 days.
The explanatory note notes that the law will help reduce the number of children in children’s homes of correctional institutions by almost half. The government, which prepared the project, estimates that there are currently more than 800 children in such institutions.
