Experts of the Russian Public Initiative propose to remove the instruction to give way to women from the rules for using public transport. Activists felt that this wording was incorrect: it violates the principles of equality and causes social tension.

As MK found out, the authors of the initiative demanded changes to the text of the Rules for Using the Metro in the part that regulates the behavior of passengers in relation to each other. We are talking about clause 1.3 – “Persons on the territory of the metro must be mutually polite, give way to disabled people, the elderly, passengers with children and women, keep cleanliness and public order, take care of the facilities and equipment of the metro.” According to experts, the conflicting wording is the part where passengers are asked to give up their seats to certain categories of citizens, among which women are mentioned. In fact, women are the same equal members of society as men. And the current rules, according to activists, violate Article 19 of the Constitution of the Russian Federation, which guarantees by the state equality of human rights and freedoms, regardless of gender.

It is curious that earlier in the rules it was proposed to give way to women in a certain condition, namely pregnant women. But about three years ago, the text was corrected, and the clarification “pregnant” was removed. Now social activists are asking to return the original wording.

By the way, the Ministry of Transport explained that the announcements on this topic, sounding in the subway cars, are a request to male representatives, and in no case are they a requirement.
