“PSG is lucky again” – Kommersant FM

The group stage of the Champions League has ended. The last two spots in the playoffs of the tournament were won by Paris Saint-Germain and Porto. In the most productive match of the day, the Portuguese club beat Shakhtar with a score of 5:3, and the Parisians ended with Borussia Dortmund – 1:1. PSG qualified for the spring stage of the tournament because Newcastle United lost at home to Milan (1:2). Kommersant FM sports commentator Vladimir Osipov followed the development of events.
The company under the letter F was not called the “group of death” for nothing. It was unclear who would make it to the playoffs until the last moment. After all, the Parisian club could not cope with its task of beating Borussia, which had already secured access to the spring part of the tournament. Of course, the PSG players took to the field in Dortmund incredibly charged. There were such moments at the home team’s goal that it seemed like the ball had nowhere to go except into the net, but the teams went into the break with the score 0:0.
It was time to think about some mystical forces that simply do not let this PSG into the play-offs of the Champions League. And at the beginning of the second half, Borussia also scored. “Newcastle” at that moment had already beaten “Milan” (1:0), and in this configuration, PSG was only in the Europa League. And even when the Parisians equalized the score, it changed little. But the French billionaire club was lucky again. Stefano Pioli’s team made an incredible comeback, scoring two goals against Newcastle.
It was this turn that allowed PSG to take second place in Group F behind Borussia, and Milan to remain in third position. This means the Italian team will enter the spring stage of the Europa League, where Milan may be one of the favorites. But you shouldn’t expect great achievements from PSG, says football agent Vadim Trushkov, who lives and works in France:
“For PSG to start seriously claiming something, to win, to be in the Champions League final, two or three years must pass. With the same squad, with the same coach. As much as possible? I think it’s impossible. They change coaches quickly at Paris Saint-Germain.”
“Porto,” which last night secured a second spot in the 1/8 finals of the Champions League, is also not considered a favorite. Although it was interesting to watch the scoring show that the Portuguese team put on last night. Imagine, Porto beat Shakhtar 5:3. But few doubted this victory, but Barcelona’s away defeat to Antwerp (2:3) came as a surprise to many. Yes, Barca advanced to the play-offs ahead of schedule, but they are unlikely to qualify for anything there, says football analyst Konstantin Kleschev:
“The team does not give the impression of a machine that is capable of crushing any opponent. There is no sense of integrity in the game. Today Barcelona does not have the same squad as City, Bayern, Real Madrid. To be honest, I don’t believe in Barcelona.”
Bookmakers still consider Manchester City, Bayern and Real Madrid to be the main favorites of the Champions League. The draw, where we will find out all the pairs of the 1/8 finals, will take place on December 18 in Nyon, Switzerland.
