Promes should not play for Spartak if found guilty – Kommersant

President of the Russian Premier League (RPL) Alexander Alaev expressed the opinion that the Dutch footballer of the Moscow Spartak Quincy Promes should not play in Russia until his innocence in the drug smuggling case is proven. On February 14, the Amsterdam District Court found Quincy Promes guilty of smuggling 1.3 tons of cocaine and sentenced him to six years in prison.
“Until the case is closed, there is an appeal, we have a presumption of innocence, I will not accuse him. If a person has committed a crime, he should not play. I don’t know how the appeal will end. On the other hand, there is the right to work, we cannot ban playing, we will watch closely,” Mr. Alaev told reporters (quoted by TASS).
On February 14, the Amsterdam District Court found Quincy Promes guilty of drug smuggling and sentenced him to six years in prison. His property was arrested, and the football player was put on the international wanted list. According to investigators, in 2020, Quincy Promes organized the transportation of 1.3 tons of cocaine through the port of Antwerp. In this case, Quincy Promes is on the international wanted list; an Interpol “red notice” is in effect against the football player (giving grounds for arrest in any country).
On March 1, at Dubai International Airport before flying to St. Petersburg, the football player was detained by local police and taken to the police station. On the same day, Promes was released and prohibited from leaving the UAE. Dutch prosecutor’s office spokesman Franklin Wattimena told AFP that the footballer’s arrest was not related to a drug case, but to an offense committed in Dubai. According to media reports, the football player fled the scene of the accident. Due to the ban on leaving the UAE, the footballer missed the match between Spartak and Zenit on March 2.
