All private clinics in Petrozavodsk have stopped performing abortions, Daily Karelia reports, citing a local resident and price lists of medical institutions. The press service of the Ministry of Health of Karelia reported “Daily Karelia”, that the law prohibits abortions in private clinics in the republic “due to lack of licenses.” The department referred to a 2020 order that the procedure should be carried out in a hospital setting.

Petrozavodsk resident Lyubov told the publication that all private clinics in the city refused to provide her with a medical abortion. The only medical institution that agreed to perform the procedure on her was the Karelian perinatal center, the interlocutor of “Daily Karelia” said. She said that all private clinics refuse her an abortion, citing a ban they received from the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Karelia. According to her, the Republican Ministry of Health denies that such information came from them.

According to the publication, the girl recorded a conversation with a representative of the Ministry of Health, where she explained the situation. The department was surprised to hear about the ban on abortion, suggested writing a written request to the ministry and recommended contacting the gynecological department of the Republican Emergency Hospital (EMS), Daily Karelia reports. The emergency hospital also refused to perform an abortion on the girl, the publication reports, citing her recorded conversation with a hospital representative.

Petrozavodsk private clinics “Para”, “Aphrodite” and “Frau Klinik” confirmed to “Daily Karelia” that they do not perform abortions. The Aphrodite clinic told the publication that the corresponding ban was received a month ago. The clinic forwarded questions about this to the Ministry of Health.

In December 2023, a bill was introduced to the State Duma to ban private clinics from performing abortions. He was never accepted. December 4, Speaker of the Federation Council Valentina Matvienko statedthat the state does not intend to prohibit women from having abortions. She emphasized that such restrictions lead to an increase in female mortality and the development of a market for illegal services. Private clinics in the Kursk and Lipetsk regions, as well as in Crimea, have already refused to perform abortions. In Mordovia and Tver region introduced administrative liability for “inducement” to abortion.
