An acute problem with measles vaccines has arisen in Moscow. At least in private clinics in the capital, the range of drugs against this viral disease has noticeably decreased, Kommersant FM found out. The American combination drug for measles, rubella and mumps MMR II was not available in any of the surveyed institutions. You can get vaccinated either with the Russian alternative “Vaktrivir” or with the domestic mono-vaccine.
And in some places there are no options left at all for either adults or children:
Clinic No. 1:
— There is a live measles vaccine, ours, Russian. This is for children. The cost of vaccination is 2.1 thousand rubles. Plus 5.2 thousand rubles. for examination by a pediatrician before vaccination. It is necessary. But there are no drugs for adults.
– That is, only a child can be vaccinated, and only with one type, right?
— Only one live measles vaccine. There is no more.
Clinic No. 2:
– We have only one vaccine left – Vaktrivir. It is Russian, triple – against measles, rubella and mumps. There is very little left. 7.7 thousand rubles. – it’s an injection and a reception.
— What about MMR II?
– It’s over. Cultured measles is not available and is not expected.
— What about MMR II? Will she also be completely gone now?
– We don’t know this yet. At the moment, the vaccine is out.
Clinic No. 3:
“We vaccinate adults too, but, unfortunately, there is currently no vaccine against measles – neither a single vaccine nor as part of a complex vaccine.
— Is there any for both children and adults?
– Yes.
– When will it appear?
“Unfortunately, we can’t give any guidance, because we don’t know any deadlines ourselves. And whether there will be a vaccine again is also unknown.
– So you won’t be able to do anything yet?
— Yes, we won’t give you any guidance for the near future, because there may not be a vaccine.
The media reported in early October about the shortage of combined vaccines against measles, rubella and mumps in capital clinics. The Moscow Department of Health then stated that a live monovaccine was available for immunization of children, and supplies of the scarce items were expected in November.
“Kommersant FM” contacted the Department of Health for clarification and is awaiting a response. Why might there be a shortage of measles vaccines? The general director of the Allergen trading house, Alla Denisova, emphasizes that there has been no foreign vaccine on the domestic market for several months, and the shortage of the Russian one is due to the fact that the country has recently been fighting outbreaks of the disease:
“The last time MMR II was in the spring, they didn’t bring it anymore. And, as far as I understand, the Americans do not promise the supply of this vaccine. The Russian one is not enough, because the outbreaks were eliminated, and there were many migrants who were vaccinated. It is impossible to produce a vaccine in three months. This takes time.
I think it’s just a situational hiccup. A lot of vaccines were needed. In Russia, two factories produce measles vaccine. According to the national vaccination calendar, measles vaccination is free, and there should be no problems with it. The plant always fulfills the plan according to the national calendar. It is known how many children are born; accordingly, the Ministry of Health purchases the required amount of vaccine. It’s just that, maybe, somewhere in a particular state clinic, something ran out.
There really isn’t enough vaccine in private clinics because the plant fulfills government orders. They should provide free vaccinations for children. When the national calendar in terms of volumes is closed, probably the remaining amount of the vaccine will be sold to distributors, and it can be delivered to private clinics.”
The incidence of measles in Russia in 2023 was a recent record. The Ministry of Health’s chief freelance specialist on infectious diseases, Vladimir Chulanov, reported at the end of October that doctors had registered more than 7 thousand cases of this infection over three quarters. Moreover, for the entire 2022 there were 102 of them, and in 2021 there was only one.
