Prime Minister of Bulgaria: Russian Orthodox Church priests expelled by special services

Bulgarian Prime Minister Nikolai Denkov disowned the expulsion of priests of the Russian Orthodox Church (ROC) from the country, saying that the Bulgarian special services were involved in this matter. This was reported by the Bulgarian National Radio.
Zhenkov said he received a report from the government’s national security agency that the priests’ actions were “not consistent with their status in Bulgaria.”
Earlier, the Russian Embassy in Bulgaria said that the rector of the Russian Orthodox Church in Sofia, Archimandrite Vassian, decided to expel the Bulgarian authorities from the country. Sofia explained this decision by saying that the clergyman allegedly poses a threat to the national security of Bulgaria.
Russian Ambassador to Bulgaria Eleonora Mitrofanova criticized the actions of official Sofia, calling them outrageous. However, the diplomat emphasized that there would be no mirror response to this step, since “we are not barbarians.”
The priests of the Russian Orthodox Church left Bulgaria on September 21 around 22:00. Currently, the Russian church in Sofia has temporarily ceased its work.
