Prigozhin: 5,000 prisoners ended their contract with PMC Wagner and were pardoned

The founder of Wagner PMC, Yevgeny Prigozhin, said that more than 5,000 prisoners had completed their contract with the military company and had already received pardons. At the same time, according to him, only 0.31% of those pardoned commit a crime within a month. Mr. Prigozhin believes that the recruitment of prisoners in the PMC “Wagner” has reduced crime by 10-20 times.
“At the moment, the contract with PMC Wagner has ended and more than 5,000 people have been pardoned. The percentage of persons who committed a second crime within one month is 0.31%. This is 10–20 times less than the standard values before SVR. Therefore, I can say with confidence: we have reduced crime in Russia tenfold, and we have shoed ex-prisoners better than they shoed pioneers and octobers in Soviet times,” said Mr. Prigozhin (the audio response was published by him press service).
Yevgeny Prigozhin himself said earlier that a contract for six months is concluded with the prisoners. As Eva Merkacheva, a member of the Human Rights Council under the President of Russia, explained, prisoners who have signed a contract with PMC Wagner are given a pardon before they are taken out of the colony. The pardon procedure is a state secret, so the decrees are not published.
There are no exact estimates of the number of prisoners recruited by the Wagner PMC. However, since the beginning of 2022, the number of prisoners in the FSIN system decreased for 32 thousand people. A sharp decline in the number of prisoners was observed in autumn. It was then that there were reports of the recruitment of PMC “Wagner” prisoners to participate in the military operation in Ukraine. In February, Mr. Prigozhin informedthat the recruitment of prisoners is complete.
In a recent report from the Institute for the Study of War (ISW) saysthat PMC Wagner may lose most of the fighters from among the prisoners, as their six-month contracts are ending.
According to sources Bloomberg, Evgeny Prigozhin will curtail the operations of PMC “Wagner” in Ukraine in favor of Africa due to the lack of ammunition and people. The businessman did not confirm Bloomberg information. According to him, the PMC will stay in Ukraine as long as Russia needs it.
