He recalled that according to the Gospel, before his last visit to Jerusalem, Jesus resurrected his friend, the righteous Lazarus. A miracle happened in the village of Bethany. It was special because Lazarus had died four days earlier. Christ came to the cave where his friend was buried and called out “Lazare! Get out! And the deceased went out to the astonished crowd, wrapped in funeral cloths.
Hieromonk Macarius points out that it was this miracle that caused Christ to be welcomed in Jerusalem as a king. Apparently, Lazarus was a famous person in Israel.
In the traditions of the Russian Orthodox Church, the celebration of Lazarus Saturday began the night before. The 40-day Great Lent has ended. Passion Week has begun – the time when the most strict abstinence from food and deep prayer are prescribed. However, two holidays give an indulgence in fasting. On Lazarus Saturday it is allowed to eat caviar. On the day of the Lord’s Entry into Jerusalem (Palm Sunday) – fish. Easter will be celebrated on April 16 this year.
