Priest John Kurmoyarov was sentenced to three years in prison in the case of fakes

The Kalininsky District Court of St. Petersburg sentenced Hieromonk Ioann Kurmoyarov to three years in a penal colony for making videos on social networks under the article on spreading fakes (Article 207.3 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation). The judge admitted that the publications contain false information about the Russian armed forces, a Kommersant correspondent reports from the courtroom.
On the eve of the debate, during which the priest said that he posted the video on social networks because of personal experiences caused by the Russian-Ukrainian conflict, since Orthodox Christians participate on both sides. He also called himself a pacifist and asked not to be equated with a politician and civil servant. Kurmoyarov recalled that he fully admitted his guilt, and stated that the investigation was unable to objectively establish the motives of the clergyman due to the lack of theological education. Then the prosecution asked him for seven years in prison with ten maximum under this article.
In addition, the prosecutor also requested a ban on managing websites for two years. In total, the court recognized as unreliable 63 case materials posted on the priest’s social networks from February 24 to June 6, 2022. Kurmoyarov in the last word asked for forgiveness from those whom he could offend with his own words.
The priest has been in jail for over a year, since June 2022. The criminal prosecution against him began after the publication of videos on the channel “Orthodox Virtual Parish” on YouTube, where the priest criticized the leadership of the Russian Orthodox Church and discussed a special military operation on the territory of Ukraine.
