The Popocatepetl volcano in Mexico threw a column of ash and steam into the air to a height of six kilometers, media reported.
Popocatepetl did not erupt for 70 years until 1994, but then became one of the most active in the country.
Mexico’s National Center for Disaster Prevention said a yellow alert had been issued for areas near the volcano.
Tourists are advised not to approach Popocatépetl.
