Pope Francis has asked the faithful to pray for his predecessor, the honorary Pope Benedict XVI.
“I would like to ask all of you for a special prayer for Pope Benedict XVI, who silently supports the church,” the pontiff said on Wednesday after a collective audience.
According to Francis, his predecessor is “very ill”.
“Ask the Lord to console him and support him in witnessing love for the church to the end,” he urged the believers.
The name Benedict XVI was taken in 2005 by the German cardinal, prominent theologian Josef Ratzinger, who ascended the papal throne after the death of Pope John Paul II.
In 2013, Benedict became the only pontiff in 600 years to abdicate. Benedict at that time was 85 years old, he explained his decision by the fact that the disease takes all his strength, which he lacks to manage the Roman Catholic Church.
95-year-old Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI lives in the Vatican.
