Popcorn Books Publishing House Prosecuted for LGBT Promotion

State Duma Deputy Alexander Khinshtein said that the first case under a new article on LGBT propaganda was initiated against the Popcorn Books publishing house. DMIA “Golyanovo” filed a case against the publishing house under Art. 6.21 of the Code of Administrative Offenses (propaganda of non-traditional sexual relations and (or) preferences, gender reassignment) and under Art. 20.1 (petty hooliganism), the deputy said.
“It became known about the first case initiated under a new article about LGBT propaganda. It was initiated after my inquiries regarding the infamous Popcorn Books publishing house, ”wrote in his Telegram channel Alexander Khinshtein.
The Popcorn Books publishing house is located in Moscow. “We publish exciting fiction books that touch on “uncomfortable” topics: issues of self-identification, racism and sexism, attitudes towards one’s own body, etc.,” reads the “About the Publisher” section on the Popcorn Books official website. Until the summer of 2022, 65% of the publishing house belonged to the Irish Bookmate Limited (the Irish company Bookmate was included in the Russian register of foreign agents in October 2022; Yandex had previously acquired the rights to use its technology). In August, the company’s share passed co-owner of the network “Chitay-Gorod-Bukvoed” Denis Kotov.
“I hope that the case will be brought to court and that Popcorn Books, which has openly challenged the state, will get what it deserves,” Mr. Khinshtein stressed. He called the publishing house “one of the flagships for the promotion of LGBT literature in Russia.”
“After our laws banning LGBT propaganda came into force in December, Popcorn Books not only continued to sell such books, but defiantly began to decorate their covers with quotes from Article 29, which guarantees freedom of speech and prohibition of censorship,” Alexander Khinshtein said. .
December 9 MP informedthat sent requests to the Prosecutor General’s Office, the Ministry of Internal Affairs, Rospotrebnadzor and Roskomnadzor to bring Popcorn Books to justice. He accused the publishing house of intending to enter into an “open battle” with the Russian state.
